A fun and heartwarming documentary on the life of BeBe Zahara Benet, the first winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race.
Marshal Ngwa, aka BeBe Zahara Benet, an immigrant to America from Cameroon, was crowned the winner of season one RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2009 and has gone on to become a leading voice celebrating Queer Black Excellence today. However, being the first champion hasn’t been easy. With 15 years of intimate access to Marshal’s life, this energetic and raw documentary reveals the financial uncertainties surrounding a career in drag, the discrimination Marshal has faced as a Black immigrant artist, and the difficult role he navigates as an LGBTQIA+ icon from Cameroon, a country where homosexuality is illegal. He responds to each of these challenges with brave reinventions of his stage show, carried out with determination, grit and grace. An inspiring story of perseverance, authenticity and superdrag star realness.
