It Came From the Deep

This year’s BFI blockbuster season is In Dreams Are Monsters – charting how the monsters of horror have evolved, made physical the anxieties of their times, and how we react when faced with the monster within.

Our programme of films, talks and workshops dives into the topic. Examining fear, introducing the genre of horror, and encouraging us to face and share our own fears. We will explore our relationship with the sea and monsters on film. For those of us living on islands water surrounds us, it offers a livelihood but also a threat to life. It is an elemental force and the last wilderness, the great unknown where lurk monstrous creatures from the deep….

In the supernatural horror directed by Walter Salles (The Motorcycle Diaries), a remake of the Japanese film of the same title, a mother and daughter, still wounded from a bitter custody dispute, hole up in a run-down apartment building, where they are targeted by the ghost of a former resident. Jennifer Connolly gives a great performance in this unsettling film.

Sunday 13th November, An Talla, 8pm

Introduced by Richard Cooke from Western Isles and Tiree Weather

John Carpenters classic film, starring Jamie Lee Curtis, strange things begin to occur as a tiny California coastal town prepares to commemorate its centenary. Carpenter achieves a palpable sense of dread and atmosphere in this ghost story which confirms him as the master of terror.

Illustrated Talk: Surrounded by Water – Our Elemental Fear

Friday 9th December, An Talla, 7.30pm

Led by Roy Stafford via Zoom

Our illustrated talk will bring together several strong themes – the misuse of water through pollution, the belief in the spirits of the seas and lochs, the ghosts and monsters associated with traditions and the dangers associated with shipwrecks, whirlpools and tidal waves.

Not all of these films would be described as ‘horror’ they all deal with elemental fear and real or psychological peril for individuals and communities.
