Between The Tides Blog

Previously in Between The Tides…………

We launched our new project! Between the Tides which will run until December 2023. Exploring the coastal landscape, the high water and low water marks and the beach, its patterns, the rock pools and more. The tides mark exposes both the passing of time and define our islands with landscapes that expand and contract twice daily.

The project will help us create a film which shows the communities connection to the tides and what happens between them. This will be shared with other coastal communities.

Our Launch event took place over two days at our new project space at The Hynish Centre. Participants made good use of the space to create, connect and explore both inside the space and around The Hynish Centre and its beach and harbour.

Family Beach Art Workshop

Each group chose a circle and drew within it.

They thought about what you find on a beach, creatures from rock, pools shells things that the tide washes in.

What patterns does the tide make  – How can you make patterns like that with a rake? Which rakes work best?

Animation Workshop – Inspired by our surroundings, a chance to get animated! In the animation workshops participants used things that you can find between the tides, on beaches and in rock pools.

Project Launch with talk by local Coastguard Team

TJ and Richard from Tiree’s Coastguard team joined us to promote water safety and discuss tides! The team discussed the practical and factual aspects of tides along with guidance on how not to be caught out by them!

Family Film Screening – 5 Children and It

The final activity of the launch – We watched Five Children and It, a film based on the novel by Edith Nesbit. A story about children exploring a beach and finding a magical – wish granting – sand fairy.

Thanks to everyone who came to Hynish and took part in the Between the Tides – Totally Tidal Weekend.

People animated giant beach faces with Jack.

Jim Parkyn created an amazing Rockpool scene with plasticine and the help of many makers.

Alasdair Satchel created a podcast made up of a collection of sounds foraged from the shore.

We watched two films, Silence of the Tides and Oran Na Mara

“I loved the film – such a treat to watch on a big screen in relaxed company”

Film Screening: The Silence of the Tides

7pm-9pm

Silence of the Tides is a cinematic tribute to the Wadden Sea,
the world’s largest, and most varied, uninterrupted intertidal area, extending along the coasts of The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

The film plays witness to the rough, yet fragile relationship between man and nature as it pulsates with the inhaling and exhaling of the tides. It’s a hypnotizing large screen look into the cycles and contrasts of the seasons: life and death, storm and silence, the masses and the individual. All set against a larger than life backdrop of sky, water, wind, mist and constantly changing light.
