WESFEST

Those of us who are obsessive about cinema know full well that the medium allows us to delve into our deepest desires and obsessions; the joy and community to be found in pursuing your passion, as well as the cautionary tales that obsessive behaviour can bring.

Film Feels: Obsession is an opportunity to explore cinematic obsessions- from auteurs to oddballs, imitation to identity theft, Stalkers to Stans – across genres, icons and subtext, giving your audiences enhanced experiences and critically engaged programming.

Extract from Sophie Monks Kaufman’s Close Up Series: Wes Anderson.

He is so obsessed with detail and the integrity of a single prop, that everything you can see has a backstory. Originality is key. Adding visual texture or a storytelling layer is vital. All of Wes’s movies require repeated viewings because the extent of the worldbuilding is too exhaustive to appreciate in a single sitting.

Rushmore (15) (1998)

Wes Andersons second feature is the story of prep-school Max and middle-aged businessman Herman and follows their friendship, rivalry and affections for a first-grade teacher. “There are few perfect movies,” says critic and Wes Anderson specialist Matt Zoller-Seitz. “This is one of them.”

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou (15) (2004)

From the Seu Jorges covers of Bowie classics in Portuguese, to bespoke Adidas trainers, Team Zissou are a stylish crew in their pursuit of the Jaguar shark. Inspired by the Jacques Cousteau classic documentaries and led by a brilliantly grumpy Bill Murray.

Fantastic Mr Fox (PG) (2009)

With stop motion Wes Anderson found his dream medium, here he can control every visual element. He takes the Roald Dahl classic and gives it the Wes Anderson treatment, bringing incredible detail into the lives of this reclusive and dysfunctional family group.

Isle of Dogs (PG) (2018)

For Wes Anderson’s second stop motion film he brings together the influence of classic animators and Japanese auteurs. His attention to detail is delightful, as we follow a boy’s odyssey through Japan in search of his faithful hound.
